Resumo
Romanceiro I: Romances da Renascença by Visconde de Almeida Garrett, a cornerstone of Portuguese Romanticism, is a collection of narrative poems (romances) that revive and reimagine Portugal’s medieval and popular poetic traditions.
Published in its fifth edition in 1875, this work reflects Garrett’s lifelong passion for preserving and reconstructing traditional Portuguese ballads, drawing from oral traditions, manuscripts, and historical sources.
The collection, the first of a broader Romanceiro e Cancioneiro-Geral project, focuses on the “Renaissance” of Portugal’s poetic heritage, blending historical, chivalric, and romantic themes with a distinctly national flavor.
