Résumé
Set in Paris in 1482, the novel centers on the deformed bell-ringer of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Quasimodo, who is shunned by society due to his appearance. Quasimodo falls in love with the beautiful Romani dancer Esmeralda, who is also desired by his adoptive father, the archdeacon Claude Frollo.
Frollo, consumed by jealousy, stabs Esmeralda's love interest, Captain Phoebus, and frames her for the crime.
Esmeralda is sentenced to death, but Quasimodo rescues her and provides sanctuary within the cathedral.
The novel explores themes of unrequited love, social injustice, and the conflict between good and evil.
