Resumen

Don Juan Tenorio is José Zorrilla’s most famous play and a quintessential piece of 19th-century Spanish Romanticism.

Inspired by the legendary figure of Don Juan—the seductive libertine who defies God and society—the play reimagines the infamous character with a more emotional and redemptive arc.

Set in 16th-century Seville, the drama follows the bold and impious Don Juan as he wagers with his rival Don Luis over who can seduce more women and kill more men in a year.

However, when Don Juan unexpectedly falls in love with the pure and devout Doña Inés, his path begins to shift.

Tragedy ensues as his reckless actions lead to death and damnation—but in a Romantic twist, love and repentance open the door to redemption, even beyond the grave.

Rich in poetic language, supernatural elements, and emotional intensity, Don Juan Tenorio explores themes of sin, love, free will, and salvation.

Unlike earlier, more cynical versions of the Don Juan myth, Zorrilla’s version gives the notorious seducer a soul—and a chance at grace.
