Summary
Argan is a hypochondriac who is obsessed with his health and spends a fortune on doctors and treatments he likely doesn't need.
Convinced he’s seriously ill, he plans to marry off his daughter Angélique to a doctor’s son—not for love, but so he can have free medical care in the family.
However, Angélique is in love with Cléante, a young man who is not a doctor.
With the help of Argan’s clever servant Toinette and his sharp-tongued brother Béralde, the household conspires to expose the absurdity of Argan’s imaginary illnesses and the medical charlatans feeding his fears.
In a final comic twist, Argan pretends to be dead to test his wife’s loyalty and ultimately decides to become a doctor himself — not through years of study, but through a hilariously absurd honorary induction.
