Summary
In the bleak highlands of Scotland, brave general Macbeth receives a chilling prophecy from three mysterious witches: he will become King of Scotland.
Driven by ambition and spurred on by his cunning and ruthless wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan in cold blood and seizes the throne.
But power won by blood cannot be kept without fear.
Wracked by guilt and paranoia, Macbeth descends into madness, seeing enemies everywhere and committing more and more atrocities to protect his crown.
Lady Macbeth, too, is haunted by guilt, famously trying to wash away imaginary blood with the cry, “Out, damned spot!”
As Scotland bleeds under their rule, the prophecy continues to unfold—with a final, violent reckoning waiting at the gates of Dunsinane.
