Summary
Jane Eyre tells the life story of a plain but strong-willed orphan girl who becomes a governess and eventually finds love and independence on her own terms.
Set in 19th-century England, the novel begins with Jane’s harsh childhood—first under her cruel aunt’s care at Gateshead Hall and then at the oppressive Lowood School.
As an adult, Jane becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her employer, the brooding and mysterious Mr.
Rochester.
Their growing affection is interrupted by dark secrets lurking in Thornfield’s attic—secrets that force Jane to confront moral and emotional dilemmas involving independence, love, and identity.
