Summary
“A Princess of Mars” is the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic Barsoom series and introduces readers to John Carter, a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War who mysteriously finds himself transported to Mars—known to its inhabitants as Barsoom.
On this dying, desert-like planet, Carter discovers he has superhuman strength and agility due to Mars' lower gravity. He becomes entangled in the complex politics of warring Martian tribes and species, including the savage Green Martians and the more humanoid Red Martians.
He soon falls in love with the beautiful Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, and fights to win her freedom and unite the warring Martian factions.
Throughout his journey, John Carter’s courage, honor, and unyielding resolve define him as a true hero in an alien world.
